What's a cover video, and what do I include?

Updated over a week ago

An elevator pitch-style cover video is a brief video to introduce yourself and your work. This is an incredibly powerful tool for landing interviews.

This should be the last item on your pitch you complete because it should encompass everything else on your profile. If you haven't completed the other sections yet, go back and do those before completing your elevator pitch.

What do I include?

Here’s a trick: describe yourself without mentioning age, education, or location. Think about your interests, abilities, and skills, and the evidence you have to back it up.

  • What are you interested in?
  • What are your skills?
  • What have you done? Make the evidence concrete.
  • What makes you stand out?
  • What are you most proud of?

Reflect the main role you are going after and the items you included in your Featured Work, Tech Stack, and Work Experience sections. You can even highlight one item on your profile you want someone to check out.

  • Keep the video under sixty seconds long.
  • Be energetic and enthusiastic
  • Let your genuine personality shine through.

Make sure you’re:

  • Well lit
  • Facing the camera
  • Standing up straight
  • In a quiet place
  • Speaking clearly

This is the first thing on your profile most people will see, so you want to look your best. Dress like you are going in for an interview.

Use your smartphone camera (horizontally!), a laptop camera and Loom, or record a few takes directly from the profile editor.

It takes everyone a few tries, so relax and don’t worry!
